The Martinska research station is a branch of RBI located in Šibenik. Since 1980, the Research station has served as a “platform” for extensive fundamental and multidisciplinary research of estuary and marine coastal and open-sea areas of the Adriatic Sea.
The Martinska research station is situated in the middle of the eastern Adriatic coast in the vicinity of diversified aquatic systems with unique characteristics, ranging from highly specific natural systems (marine lakes, freshwater lakes, estuaries, anchialine objects, groundwater systems) to those influenced by various human-driven pressures.
Such highly diverse environments offer excellent possibilities for environmental multidisciplinary research in-situ and monitoring activities. Since its establishment, numerous collaborations between the RBI and world known scientists/institutions have been partly or fully accomplished in Martinska.
With O-ZIP implementation, the renovation of the Martinska research station would strengthen the capacities, sustainable development and management of the karst coastal zone of the Adriatic Sea in line with National laws and laws harmonized with EU Directives. In line with the regular research and monitoring activities, an establishment of observatory status in relation to time-series measurements of several climate and environment key parameters is envisaged for the Martinska research station.
