Currently, emerging directions in the research field of computer and information systems include cloud computing, the development of parallel applications for both distributed and shared memory system architectures, the design and development of applications for the specific hardware accelerators (e.g. general-purpose GPUs and FGPAs), and the storing and processing of very large volumes of data, usually referred as the Big Data problems.
In order to increase the quality of the research and scientific productivity that will follow the global trends, an appropriate HPC computing and storage infrastructure is required that can efficiently support such research activities.
